SHIRTLESS FRENCHMEN : PIERRE-HUGUES HERBERT & NICOLAS MAHUT — The 34-year-old Nico had a stellar year, winning a singles title and landing just a couple spots shy of his career high at #39, as well as nabbing 6 doubles titles and securing the Year End #1 in doubles. Five of those titles (including 3 Masters and a Wimbledon win!) came with young partner Pierre, who hit a career-high in singles himself as well as landing at Year End #2 in doubles. The lithe and nimble Frenchies have beautiful touch on the court and complement each other well in both style and personality — and turns out they both look pretty damn good with their shirts off as well.

TOP 10 REASONS ROGER FEDERER HAD KNEE SURGERY2017 marked the official return of Fed to professional tennis and what a ride it’s been so far! After being sidelined with surgery for a torn meniscus in 2016, the world’s favorite tennis player pushed himself to the limits to reach the semis at Wimbledon, ultimately costing him the rest of the tennis season. While the Maestro ultimately blamed a freak incident for the initial injury that began his 2016 woes, our Tennis Inside Out readers enjoyed our rampant speculations on the REAL reasons he had to go under the knife.

INTERPRETING THE FEDERER / RAONIC TROPHY CEREMONY IN BRISBANE — Though Rog began the 2016 season in good form and good spirits, this seeming aberration of a loss to Milos Raonic was perhaps a foreboding of what was to come, including a really painful loss to the same dude (and eventual Year End #3) at Wimbledon as well. But let us think on brighter things, which we hope you will do when you laugh your way through our insane take on all the flirting, subtext, side-eye, and cyborgs at Brisbane’s trophy ceremony.

26 DAYS ‘TIL CINCY : SHIRTLESS JACK SOCK — American player Jack Sock is fist-pumping away because the post featuring his sexy muscles and tennis tan had quite the resurgence this year, besting its original page view numbers and continuing to soar throughout the year. This is thanks in part to a hilarious and generous bit of sportsmanship in a Hopman Cup match against Lleyton Hewitt at the start of the year, followed by a strong season of play that kept him in the Top 25.

Well-known for his joyous North American bromance with Canadian Vasek Pospisil, Jack Sock played the field this fall and took home two titles in doubles: Basel with Marcel Granollers and the Shanghai Masters with fellow American John Isner.

EUGENIE BOUCHARD : CINCINNATI DAY 2, PRACTICE PICS (HD) Genie hasn’t yet recovered from her dip in rankings after a serious concussion caused by a fall in the locker room. But the social media star and Canada’s sweetheart is healthy and hanging tough in the Top 50, still hopeful that’s she’ll once again reach her career high of #5 that she peaked at in late 2014. Wherever the aggressive, forward-leaping player goes on tour next year, she’ll be pursued avidly by her Genie Army, and a large battalion of TennisInsideOut.com readers.

Stanislas Wawrinka Stan the Man fight with umpire

STAN WAWRINKA : “DID I SAY ‘FUCK‘?” — Stan the Man continues to shock his critics by making the most of the weeks when his mind, body, and soul turn him into the stubborn, scrappy #STANIMAL. Despite an up and down year made difficult by some niggling injuries that narrowly cost him the Year End #3 spot, the Swiss star continued to elevate his Hall of Famer status by beating a resurgent Juan Martin del Potro, then-ranked #7 Kei Nishikori, and longtime #1 Novak Djokovic (again!) to nab his third Slam win at the US Open. While he’s most lauded for his searing backhand that cracks winners from every part of the court, Stan fans also love his impassioned rants against unfairness in a match, one of which we lovingly recreate in this post.

THE TRUTH ABOUT RAFA’S ASS — This was actually our very first post on Tennis Inside Out, way back in 2012. Rafa has always been a fan favorite, but this particular post about his most famous asset got a big upswing in views in 2016, likely due to the sexy Spanish star’s return to underwear modeling with a saucy commercial and print ads for Tommy Hilfiger. His compatriots also got a lot of love this year, because hey, shirtless Feliciano Lopez and Tommy Robredo never goes out of style.

HOW TO SPOT A TRUE FEDERER FAN — Despite missing a large part of the year with injury, Roger Federer won the ATP’s Fan Favorite Award for the 14th year in a row (along with a 12th Stefan Edberg Sportsmanship Award), further proving how much tennis’ best ambassador-er is loved all around the world. There are levels of Fed love, though, and our readers have always enjoyed this nod to the triumphs and tribulations of the most diehard of Maestro fans. Roger that.
