The Australian Open According to My Cousin Vinny
Yep. You read that right. We’re taking a look back at the Australian Open 2018 through the lens of the classic comedy My Cousin Vinny. Just go with it, people. Joey Bag O’Donuts assures you it’s gonna be awesome.
So: last year was a tough one for tennis fans, with a myriad of injuries taking players out of the game for lengthy stretches of the season. There was no clean slate for 2018, as injury and fitness issues persisted into the year’s first Slam. Those who hoped for Serena Williams’ return after her pregnancy had their hopes dashed as the multi-Slam champ decided to give herself more time to be fully ready for the physical tests of the sport. Andy Murray and Kei Nishikori withdraw from the Australian Open with persistent issues, the Japanese player opting instead to do some time in challengers to get his fitness levels back up.
As the tournament progressed, many of the tour’s stars faced difficulties. Simona Halep rolled her ankle early in the tournament, an injury that made her run to the final an extra painful one. Four men left the tourney on retirements, including #NextGen champion Chung Hyeon, who took out a still-recovering Novak Djokovic (elbow) in straights before retiring in the semis to the apparently ageless Roger Federer. The much-anticipated return of Stan Wawrinka turned out to be a mere glimpse of the Swiss player’s still-hampered greatness (after knee surgery), as he went out in the second round to a player to be named later. Seeds fell, draws collapsed, and everyone was starting to seriously question the accuracy of that whole “Happy Slam” moniker…
Let’s kick off with something less stressful, then, like fashion. Many of the ladies this year had skimpy outfits on, with lots of cut-outs, sheer fabric, and short shorts…
Meanwhile, Grigor Dimitrov was wearing a pink kit so bright that it literally glowed in the dark…
Several of the other Nike guys were sporting a kit with even more of an 80s vibe, with diagonal color-blocking and neon…
