A Look Back at January 2016 — Stunning Upsets, the German Uprising, and Bad Tennis Omens

The truly standout moment was the WTA final, a 3-set nailbiter of powerful, explosive tennis. There were no shrinking violets on the court that day. We’ve been longtime fans of Angie Kerber here at Tennis Inside Out, so we were a little invested:

The Year of the Germans at the Australian Open 2016 ended in the ultimate victory, as Angie nabbed the win and the #2 World ranking. The finals ceremony was a true celebration, with graciousness all around.

Check out the match highlights below. One of the first big matches of the year, this remained one of the year’s best — and should make some fans’ all-time greatest ever list. It was clear then that this wasn’t a fluke win from Kerber, and she went on to prove that with her stellar 2016 season.
